CAD/CAM (Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology has been used in many industries for decades. The dental field first started using CAD/CAM technology in the late 1980’s. This technology is used in dentistry to create precise dental restorations, including inlays, onlays, veneers and crowns. The dentist will use the CEREC® by Sirona Dental System, which is a chairside computer and acquisition unit that designs and fabricates ceramic restorations in a single visit. After the restoration is designed on the computer, the information is sent to a milling unit located in the office. The Sirona MCXL milling unit can turn out a ceramic restoration in as little as five to ten minutes. The benefits of the technology are numerous, such as single visit restorations, less time off work for the patient, no temporary restoration to worry about for 2-3 weeks, less chance of bacteria contamination of the tooth preparation, one time use of anesthetic, and no impressions. The dentist can also use a ceramic oven to characterize and glaze the restoration for a more esthetic result, with the patient in the office. The restorations are bonded to the tooth to provide an excellent seal to prevent recurrent decay and strengthen the existing tooth structure.
A CEREC® tooth restoration isn’t just convenient, it is also healthy. Many years ago, dentists had few options to repair decayed and damaged teeth other than amalgam, gold, and other metals. The CEREC® System uses strong, tooth colored ceramic materials to restore your teeth to their natural strength, beauty, and function. These materials closely match the composition of natural tooth structure. This means when you eat hot food and then drink something cold, the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates. So, your tooth does not crack, and you can go on enjoying your meal or snack.
CEREC® can be used for more than just crowns and fillings. CEREC® is capable of producing any single tooth restoration. Chipped or discolored front teeth can be repaired with beautiful CEREC® porcelain anterior crowns or veneers.
